Last month, researchers released controversial findings that suggest the mysterious Planet 9 may not exist after all, after analysis of a four-year survey found that observation bias may have been to blame for data that built the argument in its favor.
But now, a new study has once again revived hopes for a ninth planet lurking within our solar system.
Using a new technique to reduce such biases, astronomers in Spain found that a mysterious object located more than 300 times the distance between the Earth and the sun is, in fact, altering the orbits of objects beyond Neptune.

A new study has once again revived hopes for a ninth planet lurking within our solar system. In the new study, researchers from Complutense University of Madrid used a different approach for search for the mysterious planet, and they say it’s less susceptible to observation bias

THE NEW STUDY 

Researchers studied objects called extreme trans-Neptunian objects, located at a distance more than 150 AU and never cross Neptune’s orbit.
The astronomers measured the distances from their nodes, or the two points at which the orbit crosses the plane of the solar system, to the sun.
And, the findings suggest there is a planet lurking in the outer reaches, beyond Pluto.
The researchers found that the nodes of 28 ETNOs investigated in the study are clustered in particular zones.
They also found a correlation between the position of the nodes, and what’s known as inclination.
But, the researchers say there should be no correlation there.
The researchers say these could 'signs of the presence of a planet that is actively interacting with them.'

In the argument for Planet 9, there are many conditions that are critical, including a phenomenon known as ‘clustering,’ in which the orbits of trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) are clustered in space as a result of the massive planet.
The Outer Solar System Origins Survey released last month examined eight patches of the sky from 2013-2017, revealing the presence of more than 800 TNOs – but, after identifying eight TNOs that would be useful to test for a ninth planet, the researchers found no evidence of tight clustering.
This caused some to argue that biases in the data may be to blame for its supposed existence.
In the new study, the researchers from Complutense University of Madrid used a different approach for search for the mysterious planet, and they say it’s less susceptible to observation bias.
The team studied objects known as extreme trans-Neptunian objects, which are located at a distance more than 150 AU and never cross Neptune’s orbit.

And, the findings suggest there is a planet lurking in the outer reaches, beyond Pluto.
‘If there is nothing to perturb them, the nodes of these extreme trans-Neptunian objects should be uniformly distributed, as there is nothing for them to avoid, but if there are one or more perturbers, two situations may arise,’ said Carlos de la Fuente Marcos.

WHAT IS PLANET 9? 

Astronomers believe that the orbits of a number of bodies in the distant reaches of the solar system have been disrupted by the pull of an as yet unidentified planet.
First proposed by a group at CalTech in the US, this alien world was theorised to explain the distorted paths seen in distant icy bodies.
In order to fit in with the data they have, this alien world - popularly called Planet Nine - would need to be roughly four time the size of Earth and ten times the mass.
Researchers say a body of this size and mass would explain the clustered paths of a number of icy minor planets beyond Neptune.

Its huge orbit would mean it takes between 10,000 and 20,000 years to make a single pass around the sun. 
The theoretical Planet Nine is based on the gravitational pull it exerts on these bodies, with astronomers confident it will be found in the coming years.
Those hoping for theoretical Earth-sized planets proposed by astrologers or science fiction writers - which are 'hiding behind the sun' and linked with Doomsday scenarios - may have to keep searching.

‘One possibility is that the ENTOs are stable, and in this case they would tend to have their nodes away from the path of possible perturbers, he adds, but if they are unstable the would behave as the comets that interact with Jupiter do, that is tending to have one of the nodes close to the orbit of the hypothetical perturber.’

THE OSSOS STUDY 

The OSSOS researchers identified eight trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) they say ‘are useful in testing for the existence of a planet.’
The findings have cast doubt on Planet 9.  
It revealed:

• The eight OSSOS discoveries have orbits oriented across a wide range of angles.
  
• The observed orbits are statistically consistent with random.
  
• The OSSOS detections do not all follow the pattern seen in the previous sample.
  
• One of them sits at right angles to the proposed two clusters.
  
• The orbits are not tightly clustered.
  
• They also found a correlation between the position of the nodes, and what’s known as inclination, a parameter for defining their orientation in space.
  

But, the researchers say, there should be no correlation between these factors.
‘Assuming that the ENTOs are dynamically similar to the comets that interact with Jupiter, we interpret these results as signs of the presence of a planet that is actively interacting with them in a range of distances from 300 to 400 AU,’ said de la Fuente Marcos.
‘We believe that what we are seeing here cannot be attributed to the presence of observational bias.’
‘It is the first time that the nodes have been used to try to understand the dynamics of the ETNOs,’ de la Fuente Marcos said.
According to the researcher, the new findings support the original hypothesis proposed by the Caltech researchers in 2016, and one proposed in 2014 by another team.

While recent studies have also suggested the possibility of another planet roughly the size of Mars thought to exist in the solar system, dubbed ‘Planet 10,’ the researchers say it’s unrelated to the planet supported by their data.
‘Given the current definition of planet, this other mysterious object may not be a true planet, even if it has a size similar to that of the Earth, as it could be surrounded by huge asteroids or dwarf planets,’ the astronomer explains.
‘In any case, we are convinced that Volk and Malhortra’s work has found solid evidence of the presence of a massive body beyond the so-called Kuiper Cliff, the furthest point of the trans-Neptunian belt, at some 50 AU from the sun, and we hope to be able to present soon a new work which also supports its existence.’

6th July 2017 Cabulture News reports- Dozens of sea birds, hundreds of fish, plus turtles found dead on a beach in Queensland, Australia.
DEAD birds, turtles and mullet have become a common occurrence at Bongaree's Airforce Park in recent weeks.
Don Early has been cleaning the beachfront for the past five years in ode to his late veteran grandfather and says he's encountered 14 dead cormorants washed ashore in the past two weeks. "Something is wrong here,” he said.
"It's only a little stretch of beach and I usually find the odd dead bird, but to find 14 in such a short period is strange.
"There's more up further; I've found dead turtles and hundreds of dead mullet.+ And these birds are all the same species.”

Central California's largest rendering plant has been overwhelmed by the number of cows that died during a June heat wave, so officials are allowing dairy farmers to bury or compost hundreds of carcasses.
The unusual run of heat last month - including nine straight days of triple-digit temperatures -- and a mechanical malfunction at Baker Commodities have contributed to the overload at the plant, the Fresno Bee reported Friday.
An estimated 4,000 to 6,000 livestock died in June due to the heat wave.

Rescue teams: Something may be wrong with pilot whale species Over a four day period, rescue teams and Florida Wildlife Conservation responded to 10 different whale strandings in Taylor and Dixie counties.
Of those 10, only one was saved.
The female whale is being treated at a rehab facility in Clearwater.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is investigating a large fish kill on Indian Lake in western Dane County, caused by low oxygen levels due to blue-green algae and a lake weed die-off. Thousands of fish of all species — including northern pike, walleye, largemouth bass, bluegills, carp and bullheads — have died in the lake located in Indian Lake County Park, along Highway 19 west of Springfield Corners in the town of Berry.

Reports of carp washing ashore at one area lake have residents concerned.
For over a week, carp have been seen floating on the surface of Lake Elysian.
Whether it's along the shoreline or in the middle, these dead fish have quickly multiplied.
Both the DNR and the Waterville fisheries are trying to find the cause of this sudden death in the species, but haven't been able to determine anything yet.
