Magnitude 7.8 earthquake hits between Alaska and Russia

The tsunami threat from a powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.8 which struck between Alaska and Russia has passed, the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre says.
The quake struck in the northern Pacific Ocean between the tip of the Aleutian Islands and Russia's Kamchatka, according to the US Geological Survey.
The earthquake struck at 1.34 on Tuesday local time (0934 AEST) some 125 miles (200 km) from the city of Nikol'skoye on Bering island off the Kamchatka Peninsula.

The epicentre was west of Attu, the westernmost and largest island in the Near Islands group of Alaska's remote Aleutian Islands.
The earthquake, initially reported as a magnitude 7.7, was very shallow - only 10 km below the seabed, which would have amplified its effect, but it was quite far from any mainland.
The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre initially warned hazardous tsunami waves were possible for coasts within 300 km of epicentre.

A 220-foot sinkhole swallowed two homes and emptied a Pasco County neighborhood this morning is still growing.

The giant pit is approximately 50 feet deep, 220 to 250 feet wide, and continuing to grow. It may reach all the way to a nearby lake.

The home at 21835 Ocean Pines Drive in Land O’ Lakes fell into the watery hole this morning and the muddy pit has now claimed much of a neighboring home. Firefighters said they got a 911 call just after 7 a.m. and the hole grew within minutes after that.





“We came in the house and we didn’t have time to react; didn’t get all of our stuff. We came back and the whole neighbor’s side was cracking. We called 911 and all this stuff. It started collapsing, and their boat started going down and our boat started going down so we had to evacuate,” Thalia Chapman recalled.

Deputies have cordoned off a portion of the neighborhood and are only allowing residents with identification into the area to get valuables from the evacuated homes.

The sinkhole, by no means, is stable. Sinkholes are a regular occurrence in Central Florida due to the nature of the state’s geology. Smaller holes are common, though they have been known to damage and even destroy entire homes.

What ends up happening is, as the earth opens up, it opens up to the aquifer below — the Florida aquifer. That fills the hole with water, and that’s where the water comes from. As debris falls into it, the typical sinkhole drains out. But because there’s so much debris, this sinkhole has not started draining.

The hole is just one home away from an arm of Lake Saxon, and officials are worried that if it continues growing, it will ultimately reach the lake itself, further inundating the neighborhood.

In summary: The enormous growing sinkhole opened up behind a home at 21825 Ocean Pines Drive, Land O’ Lakes. The first call came in to Pasco County communications at 7:21 a.m. Fire Rescue crews arrived at 7:36 a.m. Two homes are destroyed: 21835 Ocean Pines Drive and 21825 Ocean Pines Drive, 100 homes are without power, but no injuries have been reported. The sinkhole is still growing. As a consequence, 11 homes have been voluntarily evacuated from the area.

Martin Szoter captured mystery red lights in the sky from near where he lives in Budapest’s 21st district, Csepel. Martin believed it to be a crash landing – and that there may have even been more than one extraterrestrial visitor.
But Martin was far from the only person to witness the mysterious light source.
Online user ‘HU MFM’ noted that they saw this strange phenomenon “five times”, calling it a “red ‘something'” appearing before every lightning strike.

There has been no official explanation from local officials or meteorological experts.
Residents have been left to speculate that it could have been an alien landing – or something as simple as a blown transformer causing the eruption of red light.

Noise and tremor scared residents of Hortolândia and Sumaré, Brazil at 11pm on July 13, 2017.

On the same day, at around 10pm another meteor also jolted homes in North Carolina.

Residents of Sumaré and Hortolândia in Brazil were alarmed by a noise followed by a tremor after a meteor fireball exploded over Campinas (SP) on July 13 at around 11 pm.
A resident reported feeling the walls of his home and the window shaking as if it were a plane was flying close to the house, or some machine passing in the street. It wasn’t like the same rocking sensation like during an earthquake, but walls and windows vibrated.



Accordng to the observatory which recorded the flying rock, 88 other meteors were spotted on the same night onl over Brazil.
According to first calculations, the fireball passed at an altitude of 90 km, with a speed of 18 km/s, lasting for 6 seconds – a long time for a rock passing through the atmosphere.
Meanwhile, a fireball was seen shortly after 10 p.m. in North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, Virginia and Kentucky and Tennessee on July 13, 2017.

At the same time, a loud boom jolted North Carolina. Because there was nothing other than the fireball reported in the area at the time of the boom, speculation is that the boom was likely a meteor breaking up in the atmosphere.

Up to five centimetres came down in the city’s first snowfall for decades, causing havoc in the Chilean capital.

More than 330,000 people have reportedly been left without power in Santiago after a rare blanket of snow hit the Chilean capital.

About 3-5cm of the white stuff came down on Saturday in what some reports say is the first snowfall there for 20 years.

A security guard at a medical facility died from an apparent heart attack while trying to clear snow, according to reports, while trees struck electricity lines.
The anomalous snowfall cut power for at least 280000 people.
And two other people – a 15-year-old girl and her grandmother – were thought to have been injured after they suffered electric shocks from a damaged cable.

Extreme cold: Bariloche in Argentina recorded the lowest temperature in its history on July 16th at 4:22am.

According to the National Weather Service, the new minimum mark of -25.4°C delayed flights, and stranded hundreds of tourists.

At first it was thought that the worst snowfall in the last 20 years would be enough for Bariloche. But then came the record cold: -25.4°C and new historical lowest temperature for the city.

For me, this is one of the most fascinating types of lightning, beyond rare, its so rare that many people disbelieve that ball lightning may even exist.

But this mysterious phenomenon does exist! The last example of ball lightning in Europe was recorded in Bergamo, Italy on July 14, 2017 at around 1:30AM during severe thunderstorms.

As reported by the author of the video, Patrizia Lapatty Bersani, immediately after the strong pulsing glow came a very strong smell of sulphur, a common trait with ball lightning reports. No sign of fire the following morning and this occurred some 2-3 meters above the tree tops on a hillside in front of the observers home.

Un fuerte sismo sacude las costas del sur de Perú

El temblor de magnitud 6,4 tuvo su epicentro a 98 kilómetros de la provincia de Camaná en la región de Arequipa.



Un sismo de magnitud 6,4 ha estremecido este 18 de julio las costas del sur de Perú. Según datos del Servicio Geológico de EE.UU. (USGS, por sus siglas en inglés), el temblor se produjo a las 02:05 GMT y su epicentro se registró en el océano Pacífico, 98 kilómetros al noroeste de la provincia de Camaná (región de Arequipa) y a 44 kilómetros de profundidad.

La Dirección de Hidrografía y Navegación de la Marina de Guerra del Perú descartó un posible tsunami, y no se han reportado heridos tras el movimiento telúrico. Sin embargo, ciudadanos reportan apagones en distintas ciudades de Arequipa.

'Enjambre' de sismos en el Pacífico

Un fuerte sismo de magnitud 7,7 había sido registrado en la costa de la península de Kamchatka, en el este de Rusia, la mañana de este martes (hora local). Previamente, otro terremoto de magnitud 8.0 se registró en las islas Aleutianas, un arco formado por unas 300 pequeñas islas volcánicas que va desde el sudoeste de Alaska hasta la península de Kamchatka.

Un nuevo fuerte terremoto sacude el Lejano Oriente de Rusia

Un terremoto de magnitud 7,7 ha sido registrado en la costa de la península de Kamchatka, en el este de Rusia, la mañana de este martes (hora local), informa el Servicio Geológico de EE.UU. (USGS, por sus siglas en inglés). El movimiento telúrico se ha producido a 11,7 kilómetros de profundidad.

El Centro de Alerta de Tsunamis de EE.UU., ha advertido de la posibilidad de que se produzcan olas de tsunami a 300 kilómetros del foco, en algunas partes de Alaska (EE.UU.) y las islas Kuriles (Rusia). Según los expertos del centro Tsunami, en Kamchatka, la altura de las olas no será superior a 50 centímetros.

No obstante, la alerta de tsunamis ha sido cancelada posteriormente.

Los expertos del Ministerio de Situaciones de Emergencia de Rusia han reportado que los temblores se sintieron en Nikólskoye y en algunas áreas de la ciudad de Petropávlovsk-Kamchatski, la más poblada de la región. No se han reportado víctimas o daños materiales.

Un 'enjambre' de terremotos

Otro fuerte terremoto de magnitud 8.0 ha sido registrado en las islas Aleutianas, un arco formado por unas 300 pequeñas islas volcánicas que va desde el sudoeste de Alaska hasta la península de Kamchatka.
Los sismólogos de la filial de Kamchatka del Servicio Geofísico de la Academia de Ciencias de Rusia han registrado en el epicentro del temblor un 'enjambre' de terremotos.

Por el momento ya han sido registrados tres principales terremotos de una magnitud de 4,8; 4,9 y 5,4, además de un 'enjambre' de pequeños eventos sísmicos.

Según los especialistas, no está claro si estos eventos son réplicas, es decir, impactos que se producen después de un terremoto de gran magnitud, o temblores preliminares que ocurren antes de un terremoto de gran alcance.



Anteriormente, el lunes a las 11:05 UTC se ha registrado otro sismo de magnitud 6,2 a 183 kilómetros de Nikólskoye, el principal asentamiento de la isla de Bering, situada a unos 180 kilómetros de la península de Kamchatka.
